They are typically made by a dental technician in a laboratory after preparing the tooth and taking impressions. Crowns are often referred to as 'caps'. They cover the remaining parts of the natural tooth when a large amount of structure has been lost. As such, they provide what is known as 'full coverage'. Crowns can be constructed from many different materials, ranging from an all-metal gold crown, through to a high strength ceramic crown. The type of crown depends on the amount of tooth left, the tooth type and the patient preference. An onlay is similar to a crown, but it only covers the cusps of a tooth. They are particularly useful if the tooth needs to be strengthened or reinforced. They can also be used to make the tooth longer/higher, which is useful if a worn dentition is being built back up again. A permanent crown can last between five and 15 years, depending on your habits, lifestyle and oral care routine. This treatment is then reviewed on a 6 monthly or 3 monthly basis depending on the severity/ activity of the periodontal disease. The calculus removal is done using specialist instruments and occasionally with local aesthetic in order to minimise any discomfort during the procedure, as such it may be done over one or two visits depending on how much calculus removal is required. The second aspect of treatment, instructing the patient how to clean their teeth, may sound simple but is actually the most important part of the treatment. If the patient is not show how to do this the calculus will continue to reform and their periodontal disease will continue to progress. The old saying of 2 minutes brushing, twice a day is often misleading as this applies to the average patient with minimal dental work in their mouth. This is carried out to improve a patient smile, correct an abnormality in the bite, or to facilitate additional treatment and is the treatment most commonly associated with treating abnormalities in a child’s bite. Modern fixed orthodontics is much more discrete than in the past and often white wire and brackets can be used to minimise the visibility of it during treatment. Often fixed orthodontics is used to correct more severe abnormalities in the bite as its ability to move teeth is generally considered greater than aligners, however it can also be a more cost effective way to move teeth. They can be made to look exactly like the surrounding teeth and should therefore be very discreet but require excellent oral hygiene in order to last as long as possible. How long a bridge lasts depends on many factors. The minimum expected lifespan without issue or falling out would be 5 years but in favourable circumstances they may last 15-20. Bridges are be held in by a crowned tooth or can be stuck onto the an adjacent tooth by a metal wing, with an adhesive. Following graduation Chris has completed the Diploma of Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties with the Royal College of Surgeons England, as well as further post graduate training in aesthetic dentistry including composite bonding and orthodontics. He has a particular interest in orthodontics and is currently undertaking a comprehensive 18 month orthodontic training program, and is happy to offer Invisalign and fixed orthodontic treatments within the practice. Chris enjoys taking a patient centred approach to all of his treatments, ensuring each patient is comfortable and involved in decision making at every stage of their treatment.
